LifePath's Supported Living Staff Commended for Excellence in Caring

Tanya Schoeffling
Bucks County Residential Director
LifePath Inc.

Sellersville, PA 18960

February 6, 2008

Dear Tanya,

I just wanted to write a letter and tell you what a truly wonderful job that Jon Golden and LifePath's Supported Living staff have done in supporting Louis. Louis began receiving supports from LifePath in July of this past year. Prior to moving into his own apartment, Louis had been living with a family member and expressed that he was very unhappy in that situation. Louis had not been to a doctor or dentist in years. He had very few friends and natural supports and expressed sadness over the fact that he had never been on a vacation. He was also frustrated by the fact that he couldn't purchase items that he wanted or needed.

Since moving into his own apartment and receiving Supported Living services through LifePath, Louis has been seen by a new primary physician, been to the dentist and had extensive dental work done, had lab work completed (for the first time that he could ever remember!) and has had an eye exam (also for the first time ever). Jon also set up counseling services for Louis since he was having some anxious feelings about problems that he had had in the past. Louis has said that this has really helped him feel better.

Louis has moved into a nice apartment which he is very happy with. He has made new friends through the Supported Living program and also inhis community. Staff is assisting Louis with his finances and he has been able to purchase items that he has wanted. In addition he's been able to feel that he has more control over his financial decisions. Staff is teaching Louis to cook his own meals and he is excited about having the opportunity to invite his new friends over for dinner. Louis has a trip to Florida planned for June and this will be the first vacation ever and the first time that he has been outside of PA! He also is planning a week-long trip to Ocean City in August. Jon has also assisted Louis with signing up for a inclusive Soccer League in Quakertown that he will be participating in this Spring.

A few months ago Louis told Jon that he never had the opportunity to graduate with his high school class and that he never received his diploma. Jon worked with Louis's high school teacher and was able to help Louis get his high school diploma. Louis is very excited about this accomplishment.

Since receiving Supported Living services, Louis's life has become more healthy and stable. He has been able to live out his vision for his life and to have experiences that help him feel fulfilled. Louis has become confident in his ability to make his own decisions. He has become more involved in his community and has made new friends. Louis has said that he is very happy with how different his life is now.

I just wanted to let you know that I have been very impressed with Jon and the Supported Living staff. I wanted to commend them for the genuine care and concern that they have shown for Louis and for their commitment to helping him live the life that he wants.

Sincerely,

Lori Taylor, Supports Coordinator

CALL TO ACTION:
E-mail Governor Rendell and Support a COLA Increase In 2009!

Indications are that Governor Rendell  is preparing an "austerity budget" that may not include a cost-of-living adjustment for the fiscal year starting this July. Now is the time to urge him not to forget about the important work organizations like LifePath provide to some of our most vulnerable and underrepresented citizens. PAR makes this easy to do. Please follow the below link and in about 30 seconds, you, too can help urge the governor to support legislation to improve our future funding. Thank you!

LifePath to Participate in Highmark Blue Shield's Annual "Walk for a Healthy Community" June 14, 2008!

LifePath will be participating in its first "Walk for a Healthy Community presented by Highmark Blue Shield" on Saturday, June 14, 2008. LifePath is participating in the walk because it gives our organization the opportunity to raise funds to support our programs for individuals with developmental disabilities. The 5K walk and one-mile fun walk will take place in Historic Downtown Bethlehem.  The fourth annual "Walk for a Healthy Community presented by Highmark Blue Shield" will benefit 13 Lehigh Valley health and human service agencies. Since Highmark Blue Shield underwrites the cost of the walk, 100 percent of the money raised by walkers supports the 13 participating organizations, including LifePath.

There are many ways to get involved to help LifePath's participation in the walk to be a success! Some are listed below:

Companies can become a corporate sponsor or form a team to participate and help raise money for LifePath. While there are no registration fees, participants are asked to get pledges for the participating organization of their choice. More information is available by visiting www.walkforahealthycommunity.org. Ann Marie would love to come out and speak with your employees on ways to become involved or even set up a sign-up day in your business' lobby or cafeteria where interested individuals can register on-site. If you or your company would be willing to put together a team, please e-mail Ann Marie Surovy at amsurovy@lifepath.org or call 610-264-5724 ext. 259 to express your interest.

Companies aren't the only ones who can form teams! Get your programs, families and friends to form their own team to walk and raise money! SPREAD THE WORD! Even leave save the date postcards at the places you regularly do business. YOU are the key to our success!

Volunteer your time to sit on LifePath's "Walk" committee and help with the recruitment and fundraising process.

"Walk for a Healthy Community" is just a fun day for participants and their families, coworkers and friends to support their favorite organization while focusing on ways to engage in healthful, active lifestyles. We hope LifePath can count on your support of this important event!

Registration is LIVE - you can sign up TODAY to walk for LifePath by visiting www.walkforahealthycommunity.org. Registration forms and brochures will be mailed next month or are available immediately by contacting Ann Marie.

Please contact Ann Marie if you have any questions by e-mailing amsurovy@lifepath.org. Thanks for your support of LifePath!
