LifePath Board Member Named Volunteer of the Year

Sam Jones, as he appeared in LifePath materials in 1980.

Sam Jones, current LifePath board of directors 1st vice president and former board president, was recently named one of Capmark's Volunteers of the Year. Capmark launched the Volunteer of the Year Awards program this year to recognize the outstanding volunteer efforts of their employees and to encourage greater utilization of the company's community initiatives programs. The first Capmark Volunteer of the Year Award recipients were chosen for the depth and breadth of their service, their impact on the nonprofit organization and target group served, and their ability to motivate others into service. In honor of Sam's recognition, LifePath will receive a $5,000 grant. Sam is also celebrating his 30th year on LifePath's board of directors. Thanks, Sam for your hard work, dedication and commitment to our mission! Below is an except from LifePath's nomination form:

Sam joined LifePath's Board of Directors in 1978. Within the first year, he became the board's president and served in that capacity for 21 years. Under his leadership, the organization grew from one program - Ridge Crest, which served 30 people with disabilities on an annual budget of $400,000 - to multiple programs in 1991 that served a total of 685 individuals with a budget of $15 million. With this strong foundation, LifePath now operates over 100 independent living facilities serving 1,200 individuals on an annual $40 million budget.

Sam's consistent leadership has made a great impact on the organization. He guided the organization through two successful CEO transitions and established financial stability. During a public funding crisis, Sam negotiated with state legislators for compensation for services rendered on the state's behalf. He also was instrumental in saving LifePath tens of thousands of dollars in interest and rental charges by establishing the Industrial Development Bond. Sam continues to serve as first vice president on the board of directors, dedicating 15 hours per month and approximately 180 hours each year to LifePath's success.

According to CEO Paul Coleman of LifePath, Inc., "Sam Jones is an exemplary model of an individual with both the heart and the capability to make a real difference."

Montgomery County Day Program Hosts "Souper Open House"

On April 18, 2008, LifePath's Montgomery County day services program hosted a "Souper Open House" for the local business community. The program was joined by 60 guests and volunteers, including special guests U.S. Congressman Jim Gerlach and PA State Representative Jay Moyer. In addition to a great lunch consisting of homemade soups, breads and desserts, guests enjoyed winning door prizes donated by local businesses, including Phillies tickets, gift certificates and a family membership to the Elmwood Park Zoo. Guests enjoyed having the opportunity to learn more about the program by taking tours and meeting the consumers that attend the program. The event's purpose was to increase awareness of LifePath and the consumers we serve, while also forging important community connections for our consumers. Mission accomplished! The Montgomery County day services staff would like to thank everyone who attended the event, made donations and helped in any way to make the event a success!
